In the absence of census returns, the electoral registers for the 1930s enable us to identify staff living at the hospital or, later, at the nurses’ hostel.
The Representation of the People Act, passed in 1918, had allowed women over the age of 30 who met minimum property qualifications to vote in Parliamentary elections. Ten years later, in 1928, the Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act gave the vote to all women over the age of 21.
Note that some of the females may have been domestic staff rather than nurses. In each of the transcripts below the matron is indicated by an asterisk (*) which is not in the original. The male staff member was the house surgeon.
