The list covers general hospitals, specialist infirmaries and public dispensaries which were established in England, Wales and Scotland during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. There are over 280 entries in the first edition.

The list does not include mental hospitals or asylums, nor is Ireland currently covered.
